In our coffee chat series, we like to invite our colleagues to get the inside scoop. Join us for a coffee chat with Tim, Senior Consultant in our Dashboard & Analytics team. Tim shares insights about his role at Lucanet, his daily routine, exciting projects, and how he stays motivated. Read on!
Hi Tim! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat. I want to get to know you a bit better, so let’s start with a fun question. If you were alone on a tropical island, what are the 3 things you couldn't do without?
To be honest, my laptop (even without internet). I really enjoy my work and I am still gaming from time to time. The second thing would be my instruments, I play electric guitar and recently I have been trying to learn to play drums. So, a lonely island where no one can hear me playing would be good…for now. The last thing would be my resistance tapes because you can really have great workouts with those wherever you are!
When did you join Lucanet and what is it you do here?
I joined Lucanet at the start of 2023 as part of the Dashboarding & Analytics team. My focus lies on offering our Lucanet Business Intelligence solutions to our customers as well as the implementation of those. Additionally, I provide advice for solving their technical challenges in the data & analytics field with my expertise. Lastly, I offer regular training on Microsoft Power BI in our Lucanet Academy.
How would you describe your role to someone who isn't at all familiar with it?
I always tell people that I work as a business consultant in IT. I basically would say I advise customers on technical topics, solve their problems, and find solutions for them. The goal of my work is enabling customers to use their data in an efficient way and consequently make better decisions in their business.
What does a typical workday or week look like for you? And what is something that stands out as a highlight in your day?
I like to wake up naturally and I do not set an alarm clock, sometimes I start to work early (like 5 – 6 a.m.) and on some days a bit later. I mostly work at home and sometimes in a coworking office, but my preparation for the workday stays the same. I check my desk setup, fill up my water bottle, and grab a cup of coffee.
First, I read my email to see if anything urgent needs my attention. After that I decide on one task for the day, and I block some time to do it without distractions (preferably first thing in the morning). Depending on my calendar I work on my different projects between meetings during the day or work with my colleagues on actual challenges in their projects. On less busy days, I try to elaborate on new technical solutions for our customers or our team. The highlights of my day would be solving a rare technical issue, helping my colleagues, or getting positive feedback from one of our customers.
What is exciting about your projects currently? Is there anything you are looking forward to?
Exciting are the new projects that combine Lucanet data with third party sources like Salesforce or have special requirements like implementing unusual visualizations for finance data, or any other kind of customization. I'm looking forward to new technical possibilities that optimize our daily work and offer even better solutions for our customers.
How do you stay motivated, even when facing challenges at work?
I try to feel the emotions I have for the situation/challenge. Then I take a step back and put things into perspective. Based on that I decide what I do. If it is a technical problem, for example, that causes me some frustration, I take a break or go for a walk before I try solving it again. In general, I think there are bigger challenges in life than work related ones, which calms my mind in tough work situations.
What are the three things that you believe characterize Lucanet and that you would love to still see in five years?
Our D&A team, Lucanet initiatives & courses and transparency (Board updates, shared roadmap, knowing what is happening at the company, etc.).
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Tim! I have one last question for you. Do you have any tips for potential candidates?
I think it is always good to know what you can bring to the table not only skill-wise, but also as a person, and be confident about it. Knowing the professional direction where you are heading can also help. Lastly, do not freak out about the interview process and listen to your gut!
