XML for Analysis

XML for Analysis (XMLA) is an industry standard for access to data saved in multidimensional databases. XMLA is based on other industry standards such as XML and SOAP.

XMLA specification differentiates between XMLA providers and XMLA consumers. XMLA data from XMLA providers may be edited by any XMLA consumer, for example in a front-end, for further analysis and reporting. This ensures simple integration of databases and clients from various manufacturers.

XMLA providers are usually multidimensional databases such as:

XMLA MDX (Multidimensional Expressions) is used as the query lanuage. MDX is similar to SQL and is optimised for query of multidimensional data.
