The term back-end is used in the field of information technology in connection with layer classification. The back-end is closer to the system, whereas the front-end is closer to the user. According to the input-processing-output model, the back-end is related to the processing and output, while in this case the front-end is the entry field. With client-server applications, the programme running on the client is referred to as the front-end, and the one running on the server is the back-end.
